Jan Håfström
Biography
Jan Håfström is a Swedish artist working across figurative and abstract painting, sculpture and film. His work since the 1960s has drawn on memory and popular imagery, including Walker, the Phantom’s alter ego.
Håfström’s early work drew on comics and other media in the spirit of Pop Art. His practice has moved between abstraction and figuration, with memory and recurring symbols connecting these different forms.
Walker, the Phantom’s civilian alter ego, is a recurring figure. Moderna Museet’s collection also includes Skogsaltare (1970), a sculptural work made with painted plywood, artificial grass and model fir trees.
His artwork appears on the covers of Barbarisms’ West in the Head and Zugzwang.
