En Skugga

En Skugga is the Swedish-language indie project of Nathan Dufva Carlén. His debut album Livet mellan träden brings together personal lyrics, sharp melodies and sounds rooted in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Its eleven tracks were made with producer and multi-instrumentalist Tom Skantze.

Songs finding their place

For Nathan, songwriting often begins with fragments: a melody, a chord progression or an unfinished lyric left to rest until something new falls into place. His earliest experiments were recorded straight onto a portable cassette recorder. That sense of a song arriving unexpectedly remains central to his writing.

Livet mellan träden gathers eleven of these stories. When the album was made, its oldest fragments reached back fourteen years; opening track Kött och blod was one of the ideas given time to grow.

The Bear Quartet is a shared reference for Nathan and Tom Skantze, who produced the album and played many of its instruments. Nathan also cites The Cure as a recurring influence. Vera Stigmar, Elias Eriksson, Anna Karin Penton and Peder Sjögren also contribute to the album.
